
President George Bush's administration three years ago awarded about $1 billion to manufacturers to increase and speed production of vaccines, particularly after the spread of the H5N1 bird flu virus.
Several of the world's largest vaccine-makers, including GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis, were awarded multimillion-dollar U.S. contracts to find a faster process than egg-based technology. The Obama administration has continued the support.
"After clean water, vaccines save more lives than any other technology," said Julia Bailey, biotechnology analyst with Citigroup Global Markets, who added that "new products and manufacturing technologies are changing the shape of the market."
