Swine flu infections in which the virus mutated to a form that's more severe or less sensitive to drug treatment are being investigated by European and U.S. public health officials.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

It's also the use of expired antivirals that were stockpiled but never sold...and Donald Rumsfeld wasn't going for that. An expired antiviral will most likely do the opposite of the original intent..causing more virulence instead of less.

While there is little risk posed by the mutations, investigators are monitoring the new clusters closely, according to health officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

Now how could they possibly expect us to believe that. The original virus began as a small cluster of illness too. Tamiflu is a pretty worthless anti-viral anyway. Big pharma won't like this. I can't tell you how many times I've warned viners about this flu until I finally gave up. I hope this new strain does not reach pandemic proportions or we are in trouble!

That's what a virus does best -- mutate to take advantage of any weakness. Let us hope Ebola, Marburg or any of the other filoviruses never get loose in the general public. Talk about unstoppable!

There are over 6 billion human beings on this planet. Given the normal rate of mental disease science predicts about 5% of them, around 300 million people, will suffer from paranoid schizophrenia.

What science has not explained is how come all these paranoid schizophrenics live in the same country.

November 10, 2009:Margaret Hamburg MD FDA: To health care professionals

It is likely that most families in the United States will be touched by H1N1 influenza this year. Fortunately, many will experience mild illness. Others will endure unspeakable tragedy. The benefits of preventing serious consequences from infection with the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus far outweigh the risks associated with the vaccination.

Local Health departments now have the vaccine available for distribution.

No- it is true-there is a difference between what we are seeing in patients and what the epidemiologists have seen possibilities of. The thing that is putting people in the hospital here, now, is a mutated rhinovirus. The people are just as sick- if not sicker, and this is just really a bad year for the people.

At least feces can't cough on us ( but if you have ever changed a litter box you may beg to differ) and it is not transmissible from human to human, that is one of the problems with H1n1---HOW CONTAGIOUS IT IS.

Dixielee you know the H1N1 vaccine that you just took would have no protection from a mutated strain right? In theory the scientist would have to develop a new vaccine that matched the new mutation.

Not true. there has only been a couple of point mutations that make it more virulent, The H1N1 virus would have to totally mutate into a different virus for that vaccine not to have conferred some immunity.

No, but the vast majority will report no side effects. If any one is concerned they should talk to a licensed physician, in particular, one who is an infectious diseases specialist ( and there are plenty around. They would know the low-down. Unfortunately many general practitioners wouldn't.)
