In The Vaccine War, FRONTLINE lays bare the science of vaccine safety and examines the increasingly bitter debate between the public health establishment and a formidable populist coalition of parents, celebrities, politicians and activists who are armed with the latest social media tools, including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, and are determined to resist pressure from the medical and public health establishments to vaccinate, despite established scientific consensus about vaccine safety.

'Audience Engagement: Beginning one week before broadcast, Wednesday, April 21, visitors to FRONTLINE’s web site can interact with medical experts who will be responding to comments and answering questions. Visitors can also take a survey featuring five key questions about their attitudes toward vaccines, and find out how well their responses match responses from a nationwide survey.'

One Miscreant

Bioethicist Art Caplan argues that society has the right to coerce its parents to vaccinate their children even if vaccines carry a small risk. “Parents don’t have unlimited rights with respect to the welfare of their children. You can’t kill them. You can’t put them at risk of fatal disease. You can’t put them at risk of devastating disability.”

Does anyone else see the duality of this statement?

A "bioethicist" argues that society can tell them what to do, even if it's risky. But parents don't have the right to subject their children or society to the diseases the vaccines protect against. In other words, the government can put the children at risk, but the child's parents cannot. Is it any wonder why the parents are digging in?

This conflict will never be resolved until the science is proven, one way or the other. It almost seems it will come down to which risk is riskier. a.k.a-"The lesser of two evils". There has to be a better way than that, IMO. If there isn't, how can we call ourselves an advanced society?

Interesting post and topic.

Seems like FRONTLINE is taking the establishment's side on this one...

Personally, I don't trust vaccines ... Not the science behind them, but, rather, the sh*t that gets put into them and then into our bodies...

"Seems like FRONTLINE is taking the establishment's side on this one..." They had better come across with some good studies and evidence for the pro position. I would love to believe big pharma's in-house studies...but they don't exist. We have post marketing studies instead. The problem is, surveilliance, data, for the post-studies do not exist...they are not being done.

"Seems like FRONTLINE is taking the establishment's side on this one..."

The establishment backs their claims with data. I think Frontline will present both sides of this issue. What the "anti-establishment" side must do is independent research. Without that research, they will appear to be on an emotional witch hunt.

What I want to know, scientifically speaking, with all of the advances in the human genome, why can't the scientific community study the effects of vaccines on the human body. Looking at medical records can hardly replace laboratory research. Are genes mutating, are enzymes levels changing, endocrinology imbalances, what? Something is going on.

Another thing I do not like is the death threats being sent to supporters of vaccines. This is totally wrong and does nothing to support the position. In fact, it erodes any credibility from the anti-establishment position. IMO.

The so-called anti-establishment group is hyperbole. Big Pharma has failed to do sufficient pre market studies as well as post market studies on their drugs...period. I, personally am not willing to act as a guinea pig...but then we aren't guinea pigs...because they don't care what their drugs do to us. It's all about the money. Not making money on my body...my health is too important.

I hope that you're right. As their Web site reads right now, though, FRONTLINE is really pushing the "settled science" POV as being the standard of truth...

FRONTLINE is really pushing the "settled science" POV as being the standard of truth...

If that's the case, they should re consider, because that is a biased POV. I never saw FRONTLINE as a biased source of reporting. Maybe I'm being to optimistic.

Exactly, what is "settled science" anyway? Is that "statistical analysis" of "medical records" or is it laboratory research, understanding the effects on the body? That's what I'm interested in, never liked stats in school either.

I always thought that it was pretty unbiased, too.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what they actually do.

It is definitely a topic that needs light...investigation, and truth. FRONTLINE, I'm sure, will attempt to look at the issue in total.
