The World Health Organization (WHO) recently issued a fact sheet warning about the corruption and unethical practices that are endemic to every step of the pharmaceuticals business.

Oh BABY! WHO bringing down big pharma?

Whadda ya know:
Corruption is especially hard to fight because most cases go unreported. The WHO attributes this both to fear of retaliation on the part of whistleblowers, and also the institutionalization of corruption "to the point where people feel powerless to influence change in their countries."
I didn't even know WHO was in town but it sure looks like they know how things work in the good old U.S. of A.....
Good article!

Food for thought pertaining to legalities of medicinal marijuana. Also puts Sarah Palin's "Death Panel" BS on the foot of the GOP/RNC. Take this into context with health care reform and then tell everyone there shouldn't be tougher regulations.

Maybe pharma did not donate enough money, free meds or something to WHO.

WHO is limited as to WHO they can point their finger at....

Key facts (from your link....)
- US$ 4.1 trillion is spent globally on health services every year, with US$ 750 billion spent in the pharmaceutical market.
- 10 to 25% of public procurement spending (including on pharmaceuticals) is lost to corrupt practices.
Heck even just the lower 10% estimate of the 750 Billion spent is about 75Billion, that is substantial in itself......geesh that could help more people if it were in their pockets instead of the Big Pharma's pockets....

I guess it all boils down to WHOse data you going to trust with your lives.

When a Dr. tells you, "that there better be a gun to your head, if someone tells you to stop this medication", it makes having a choice moot, sometimes WD. Thanks for the fact sheet.
Good post GOZO.

Excellent post, but the Fact Sheet (thank you Walk'n Dead) was very revealing.
It is one thing to be aware of this, and frankly, the Fact Sheet documents what has probably been suspected for some time; but it's another thing to dismantle the culture of corruption that penetrates the pharmaceutical industry globally. This is quite a task and will require serious effort on behalf of a number of countries, many whose officials profit handsomely from this sleaze. In the U.S. pharmaceutical special interests and lobbying groups exert significant influence over Congress, legislation as well as the FDA, so this issue impacts all of us at home.
To combat this corruption will, of course, require a coordinated global effort that is probably best led by the U.N. (I may regret saying this), if the U.N. has the political resolve and strength to take on such an initiative. Of course, the U.N. will also have to tackle issues of corruption within its own ranks; I recall the abuses of the Oil-for-Food program, which was a victim of staggering mismanagement and corruption.
Nonetheless, immediate action is required, and work should begin immediately.

I just posted the link because the article had a link to WHO but not the Facts Sheet...so people could read it straight from WHO.
I look at corruption like I look at cleaning my house: I start with the kitchen, then living room, then baths, to bedrooms...and by the time I finish the bedrooms the family has messed up the kitchen...it only get rotationally cleaned up. Same with corruption by the time someone cleans up one area and moves onto the next, the first areas are getting dirtied all over again. It not only has to be someone cleaning it, but it has to have team work from the ones who make the messes to keep it clean. Or we live like hoarders...in a big overwhelming mess.
All of what you mentioned needs cleaned before anything can be effective.
I know it is simplistic but the best representation I could write this morning. It's going to take team work from everyone...even the ones creating the mess sadly I doubt their on board.

It's actually the best way to tackle a large, self-perpetuating problem. K.I.S.S.

True, but it won't happen. Why should anybody 'clean' when the corruption is making them wealthy? Sad.

If they could just clean it up here, in the US-- maybe other countries could clean up their mess.
Pipe dream, I know, but a wishful thought!

We (the US) used to be the standard for the world. With all of the corruption in government, in the financial sector, and in the supposedly life-giving pharmaceutical/medical industry (among other big-businesses), it's really no wonder that the rest of the world is following right along.... on the path to destruction. Can't our legislators see this, or project that far ahead?
"The love of money is the root of all evil" pretty much sums up the reasons for their oversight, I guess.

Perhaps they can't see it, because of the money lining their pockets from the pharmaceutical companies. They are very powerful lobbyists, paid for by our money. Sigh...
I just filled a prescription tonight that was $30 last year and is now $60. What's the diff? It has gone over-the-counter. I can pay $60 for a 30 day supply, ($2 each), or $48 for a 21 day supply, ($2.21 each). Insurance won't cover it any more, because it is available over-the-counter, although I have to take two pills to equal the prescription strength. Gee, I'm getting gouged, again. (There is no generic available, either.)
Little things like that, I see as corruption. A "collusion", if you will, between the insurance company and the pharmaceutical company. I get to pay more for the same thing. If I could take the lesser strength for the same results, I would. I've taken this medication now for 11 years. When is the ding dang patent going to run out, so that I can take a generic?
Sigh...
