At the same time that our Surgeon General has declared we have an epidemic of obesity, our government is using our tax dollars to cater to special interests and to subsidize the very foods that are making us fat.

Wouldn't cutting subsidies SAVE money? If it also contributed to conditions that favored better public health, that sounds like a good plan to consider.

If so moved...you may call Sen. Blanch Lincoln (Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry) at 1 202 224 4843; or Sen. Saxby Chambliss (Ranking Member) at 1 202 224 3521 and tell them how you feel about this topic.

Good article.
The developed world is universally fighting an uphill battle aganist obesity. If I were to guess I'd say there are a few factors at play: convenience / speed of unhealthy food (we're all time poor), appeal & possibly even glamour of unhealthy food (artificial colours, advertising featuring musicians, sport stars etc), portion sizes, taste (sweet and/or fatty tastes good), lack of consumer education and lack of consumer information (99% fat free is loaded with sugar so it doesnt taste like cardboard). Add this to the fact that, as this article shows, unhealthy food is cheaper, and its a battle we're loosing.
The most at risk are those who don't have the education, information and/or financial means to make healthy choices.

Jamie Oliver opened a can of worms recently with our federal government food programs at our schools. There is no doubt viewers were upset and fustrated. I can only hope we haven't seen the last of the food revolution.
