Prions are mysterious. They cause mad cow disease. Yet they are not infectious agents. They are not alive. Consequently, they cannot be killed. They do not reproduce. They cannot be destroyed by burning. They are bits of protein, parts of molecules.

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy:

Also known as: BSE; Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (when it infects humans); Mad Cow Disease

Description

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is a disease that usually infects cattle. It can also be transmitted from cattle to humans. When BSE afflicts humans, the resulting illness (known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease) can resemble the symptoms of Dementia. It is ultimately fatal.

BSE was once thought to be caused by a Virus. More recently it has been determined that it is caused by a type of Prion.

Symptoms of BSE

Nervous System

Apprehensiveness is one of the initial symptoms of BSE.
Impaired Muscle Coordination (Ataxia) is one of the symptoms of BSE.
Memory loss is a symptom of BSE.
Excessive Nervousness (especially to external stimuli such as touching of the Skin) is a symptom of BSE.

These Substances may Help to Prevent/Treat BSE

Amino Acids

N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) may be useful for the prevention or treatment of BSE (due to its Antioxidant properties).

Carbohydrates

Chondroitin Sulfate may help to prevent BSE (Prions responsible for BSE form undesirable deposits that are neurotoxic - Chondroitin Sulfate may help to prevent Prions from forming the deposits that cause neurotoxicity).

Enzymes

Strategies that increase Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) levels/activity may be useful for the treatment or prevention of BSE.

Due to the non-bioavailability of most forms of oral SOD supplementation it is presently recommended that the most practical means of SOD supplementation is to stimulate the body to produce its own endogenous SOD by supplementing with Copper, Manganese and Zinc.

Minerals

Copper may be useful for the treatment of BSE due to its ability to increase Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) levels.

Polyphenols

Curcumin may be useful for the prevention or treatment of BSE.

Vitamins

Vitamin E may be useful for the prevention or treatment of BSE (due to its Antioxidant properties).

Thanks for the refreshed, had read about this before, but it had slipped my mind...oops(symptom of mad cow's dz). Really I went looking to see if you had seeded the 1st part also in June, but didn't find it. You had a lot of good seeds though, I am going to check some of them out. Thanks

This is a serious problem and how we are watching for it ( or not watching for it very well) in the US is sad. It as many other things will not become an issue until it becomes one that gets out of hand.
